Free runbook

Get found online. Eleven fixes you can do yourself.

The work I see slip away from small businesses usually comes down to small things: hours on Google that say Closed while you're picking up the phone, a number on the map that doesn't match the one on the truck, a Facebook link that goes nowhere. This runbook is those fixes, in order, each with a "done when" check you can see for yourself. Nothing in it needs me.

What's in it.

  1. 1Claim and verify your Google Business Profile
  2. 2One name, one phone, one address, everywhere
  3. 3Tap your own phone number
  4. 4Real business hours
  5. 5Social links that work both ways
  6. 6Your license number and trust signals on the site
  7. 7Real photos of real jobs
  8. 8One page for the job you most want more of
  9. 9Ask for reviews, and answer every one
  10. 10Set up Google Search Console
  11. 11Bonus, five minutes: Bing Webmaster Tools

Fix number one, as a sample.

Claim and verify your Google Business Profile

Why it matters.Your Business Profile is the listing that shows up on Google Maps and in that box of businesses near the top when someone searches "deck builder near me." It's where people tap to call you or get directions, and Google counts each of those for you. Until you claim it, you can't fix anything else on it.

Done when: you sign in, open your profile, and it no longer asks you to verify. Your listing shows up on Maps when you search your business name.

The steps between those two, and the ten fixes after it, are in the PDF.

Who it's for.

  • Owner-operated trades and small businesses with no IT person and no marketing hire.
  • Anyone who was told to "do SEO" and wants the part that costs nothing first.
  • A business that just opened, moved, or changed its phone number.

FAQ

Questions about the runbook.

Is it really free?
Yes. You give an email address, the PDF link arrives in it, and that address goes on the Spearworks AI list: a short email about twice a month with one practical thing for a small business. Every issue has an unsubscribe link.
Is it only for contractors?
It was written for owner-operated trades, so the examples are decks and plumbing. Ten of the eleven fixes apply to any local business. The license item names Oregon's contractor rule as the example and says what to do if you are in another trade or state.
Do I need any software or a hire to do these?
No. Each fix is done inside accounts you already have or can create at no cost: Google, your website editor, your social profiles. Most are done in one sitting. A few go faster on a computer than a phone.
What if I get stuck?
Reply to the email that brought you the runbook and say which fix. The first consult is free, and if the answer is a two-minute pointer, that is what you get.
