Remote support

If we are on the phone together and I need to see your screen, this is how we do it. It takes about two minutes.

I will never call you out of the blue and ask for a code

If someone calls, emails, or texts claiming to be me and asks you to install remote software or read them a support code, it is a scam. Hang up. Then call me directly at (503) 888-0654.

A real session only ever starts from a call you placed to me, or a time already on our calendar. Never from a call that came to you first.

Start a support session

Opens Google's own Chrome Remote Desktop site in a new tab.

Three steps

  1. Click the blue button above. Sign in with your Google account if it asks. This is Google's website, not mine.
  2. Under "Get Support," click the download button and install the small Google app it hands you.
  3. Click "Generate Code." Read me the 12-digit code over the phone. It expires in five minutes, so generate it while we are already talking.

What I can see, and what you control

  • I can only see your screen while the session is open. A banner stays on your screen the entire time telling you sharing is on.
  • You can end it instantly with the Stop Sharing button. You do not need my permission and you do not have to explain why.
  • Each code works exactly once. I cannot reconnect later with the same code.
  • Nothing is left behind that lets me back in on my own.
  • Close anything you would rather I not see before you generate the code. Banking tabs, email, whatever. I would rather you be comfortable than efficient.

What remote support is good for

Being honest about this saves us both a wasted appointment.

Works well

  • Computers, Mac or Windows
  • Printers, scanners, and getting them back on WiFi
  • Email, passwords, and account lockouts
  • Software you need walked through
  • Anything living on a screen I can reach

Does not work

  • Televisions and streaming boxes
  • Android phones and tablets
  • Routers with no computer attached
  • Anything physical, like cables and antennas

iPhone or iPad? That works too, just a different tool. See below.

Those are a phone call, a video call where you point a camera at the thing, or a visit.

iPhone or iPad? Use FaceTime instead

The steps above are for computers. iPhones and iPads work too, through Apple's own FaceTime instead of Google's tool. Nothing to install.

Both of our phones need iOS 18 or later, which is nearly every iPhone by now. If yours is older, call me instead and we'll handle it a different way.

  1. Start or answer a FaceTime call with me.
  2. Tap your screen to bring up the call controls, then tap the share icon and choose to share your screen.
  3. Tap the shared screen and request control. I'll get a notification asking me to allow it. Once I do, a short countdown hands me control.

Your phone stays yours the whole time. Tap, swipe, or type at any point and your action wins over mine. Tap Stopat the bottom of the screen, or just hang up, and control ends immediately. I can open apps and change settings to help, but I can't make payments, erase the device, or do anything you couldn't see happening in real time.

On a Mac, one extra step

The first time you run it, macOS will ask you to allow Screen Recording and Accessibility in System Settings, and you may have to quit and reopen the app afterward. It is a handful of clicks and it is normal. Call me and I will talk you through it rather than have you guess.

No Google account?

That is common and it is not a problem. Call me at (503) 888-0654 and we will do it a different way. Do not create a Google account just for this.

What it costs

Remote sessions bill at the same rate as on-site work, $150 per hour. If you are already working with me, this is simply how we meet without the drive.
